A Different Perspective on Iran

Mon Mar 06, 2006 at 03:19:09 PM PDT

I found a fresh perspective this afternoon on what to do about Iran's nuclear program. It doesn't involve air strikes, invasions, or nuking anybody.

More below the fold.

This fresh point of view comes from an unlikely source --- long-time Iraq hawk Christopher Hitchens. I would encourage everyone here not to ignore this post just because Hitchens wrote it. This time Hitchens doesn't mount his familiar hobby horse of pre-emption.

To summarize: He recognizes something I already knew. The only thing Iranians hate more than the mullahs is being "liberated" by foreign invaders.

He calls for normalizing relations. That means embassies, ambassadors, trade and cultural exchange. This country has a large, well-educated and articulate Iranian exile community, and the vast majority of the younger generation in Iran hates the theocracy and is in touch with their brothers and sisters overseas via the Internet. He makes a good case that people-to-people relations would do much to undermine the regime.
